Challenge
With a plan to roll out solar energy technology throughout their 145 school network and become leaders in sustainable practices, Brisbane Catholic Education sought to improve their carbon footprint, energy efficiency and cost savings across their schools.
Solutions
Following stakeholder workshops and feedback, 3 solar suppliers were selected for a supplier panel. A collaborative, extensive process then lead to a pilot project, with a 100kW system implemented at St Stephens Catholic Primary School in Algester.
Results
Project results from the pilot were encouraging, including:
- 58% of energy needs provided from Solar
- Financial payback in 7 years
- 10 year performance guarantee
- Substantial reduction in CO2 emissions
- Monitoring platform available for students to analyze solar and energy data
- Integrated into curriculum in the Environmental Learning Centre
Sustainability Activities
Challenge
With a plan to roll out solar energy technology throughout their 145 school network and become leaders in sustainable practices, Brisbane Catholic Education sought to improve their carbon footprint, energy efficiency and cost savings across their schools.
Solutions
Partnering with energy experts 1circle, a program of sustainability activities was developed. An award-winning ecological plan was developed including considerations for LED, solar, HVAC, efficiency, built form and landscape improvements. 400 school leaders were coached on energy improvements. A suite of energy management tools was developed, and a panel of suppliers was established to install the solutions on each school.
Results
- Energy Plan and audit completed for all 145 schools
- Supplier panel established with 3 leading solar installation contractors including a robust set of technical specifications, O&M schedules, competitive rates and contractual agreement
- Supplier panels also established for LED lighting and air conditioning design and installations
- Managed the installations of pilot schools for Solar and LED lighting to demonstrate a successful outcome
- Successfully engaged with a large number of school stakeholders via a supplier conference with 8 suppliers and technical experts
